Do you know Cathy of the PBB Double Up? She was the housemate that was chosen to be the representative of the PBB Swap to Finland. At first, I find her as just a simple and plain housemate, but during the PBB Swap, I became proud of her. She was able to represent the Philippines well. Okay…I am not going to talk about her but about her hometown, Bohol. Yes, she is a native of Bohol.
Bohol is located at Central Visayas famous for the Chocolate Hills, Tarsier, the Loboc Children’s Choir, and the yummy Peanut Kisses.
I first knew Bohol through Cesar Montano. We’re not close. He does not even know me personally. But, he is really a proud Boholano. Next, was because of the Loboc Children’s Choir. A documentary show once featured this team. They were a team of little children trained to sing, and years back then, they were able to give a pride for the Philippines for winning an international competition. Third was because of my roommate in college, Ate Pros. She used to sing native Bohol songs like “Ang Kabaw” (The Carabao). Since then, I had a special interest in Bohol.
Last year, one of my goals was fulfilled. I had a chance to visit the place because of the League of Mayors. From Manila, we rode Cebu Pacific and landed at Tagbilaran City. We stayed at Corolandia Resort. It was just a 15 minute tricycle ride from the airport and, luckily, just a few blocks away from where the convention was held. If you are on a barkada trip, Coralandia Resort is a suggested place. The rent was very cheap (less than P1000 or $20-30 for 4 persons), and the cottages were in front of the sea. You’ll wake up in the morning breathing the scent of the fresh sea breeze.
Since we had plenty of time before the convention, we decided to check out the famous places at Bohol. From Tagbilaran City, we rode a jeepney to our first stop-Loboc River Cruise and the Floating Restaurant. We passed by Baclayon Church, one of the oldest stone church in the Philippines and the Blood Compact Site at Brgy. Bool, Tagbilaran. After a few minutes, we finally arrived at Loboc Poblacion where the river cruise starts. They say that whenever you visit Bohol, do not miss the Loboc River Cruise and the lunch served on board. Lunch was a buffet and featured different kinds of seafood. You may also request a different food if you don’t really like the food in the menu but at an additional rate. In the middle of the cruise, you will be serenaded by the Loboc Children’s Choir.
After our sumptuous lunch and river cruise, we then decided to visit the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary. It was just a few minutes away from Loboc and can be reached via Habal-habal or motorcycle. The Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta) is known to be the smallest primate. They are very cute, small creatures with noticeably big eyes (bigger than its entire brain). If ever you’ll visit the tarsiers, make sure you do not take photos of them with the camera flash on. They say that the light from the camera makes the tarsier weak.
After that, we decided to visit the “Eight Wonder of the World”- Chocolate Hills. We rode on a bus bound to Carmen, Bohol. The trip was interesting. The bus was very old yet could load a lot of people. There were even passengers on top of the bus. The road was zigzag but it was just a piece of cake for the driver. We passed by the luscious green manmade forest in Bilar. It was very cool and beautiful. We got off at Carmen and again rode the habal-habal up to the entrance to the chocolate hills. Going up to the place overlooking the chocolate hills was easy. You just have to climb more than a hundred stairs! Make sure you took your calcium supplement before climbing.
But it was really worth it when we reached the top. The scenery was awesome. It was May when we went to Bohol so the hills really looked like chocolate kisses.
After that day of fun and adventure, we treated our digestive system at Chicken Ati-atihan located at Tagbilaran City. For me, this resto is the home of best chicken inasal. The food was very cheap ($1 per meal) yet worth it.
If you are going to Bohol, do not also miss the fine white sand at Panglao Island. You can also go diving and dolphin watching at the Island of Balicasag.
